Five top tips for summer wellness

Get out and about safely in Melbourne this summer to enjoy bike rides, shady walks and more.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, some people took the opportunity to embrace long walks and bike-riding in place of commutes and social activities.

While we continue to stay safe and follow physical distancing guidelines, the warmer weather presents the perfect opportunity to continue these healthy habits, and start new ones.

Here are five top tips for summer wellness.

1. Take a class

Move your own way at our recreation centres and in your own home by taking advantage of our many fitness facilities and classes.

Even during lockdown, Melburnians were sweating it out in their lounge rooms using the Active Melbourne app, and now you can get back in the gym and in the pool.

2. Enjoy the ride

Get around the city more safely and easily on your bike, whether you’re a new or seasoned rider, thanks to 40 kilometres of new kerbside-protected bike lanes.

The new lanes connect to Melbourne’s existing bike lane network and make it easier to commute to work, drop the kids off at school or take a gentle Sunday afternoon ride to enjoy some outdoor dining.

3. Grow your own food

Join the increasing number of Melburnians who are growing their own food to enjoy the many benefits to your wellbeing.

If you don’t have room at home, consider becoming a member of your neighbourhood community garden.

4. Find a cool route

Discover the coolest routes through the city on hot summer days by using our new Cool Routes tool.

As Melbourne experiences more frequent, extended and intense heatwaves due to climate change, this tool is designed to help you travel through the city more safely and comfortably, using a mix of city research and data from microclimate sensors.

5. Stay hydrated

It is vital to drink water during hot weather. Carry a water bottle and refill at one of our 60 hydration stations at key sites including Swanston Street, Bourke Street Mall and the Tan Track.

Caring for people experiencing homelessness

This year we’re offering water bottles, cooling towels, insect repellent, sunscreen and sun hats through our partners as part of our Heatwave Response Plan.
